Zwischen A und w

Gregor Hildebrandt

Info: Gregor Hildebrandt (b. 1974, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, DE) presents his first solo exhibition Zwischen A und w at Ruttkowski;68 in Bochum. Gregor Hildebrandt is in Bochum. More precisely, Zwischen A und w, so to speak. Hildebrandt’s work moves between beginnings and ends, the black and white, the Alpha and Omega, his parents Astrid and Wolfgang, Anni Albers, a pharmacy lightbox, David Bowie, Alberto Burri, a farmer, and the Wurlitzer. There runs a magical universe, world of recordings, magnetic notations, or noted references. Hildebrandt mostly works with the gradually vanishing storage media of recent history and transforms them into art. The reinterpretation of everyday objects and pop cultural myths undergoes a twofold auratic enhancement, also on account of the subjective idea of the productions once stored there. Playfully, Hildebrandt combines the most varied elements and references from music, film, literature, and art history for a collaborative game of allusions. The paintings made of magnetic tape or audio cassettes, the sculptures created from specially shaped vinyl, the terrazzo like mosaics of broken records, and the supermarket inspired exhibitions with chess pieces call forth new and sensuous familiarities: tactile experiences of music, painterly representations of sound, homely decors and stylistic variations, not least hidden echoes of minimalist aesthetics. Interior design as an exclusive mass and storage medium. A new view of Nouveau Réalisme, the revolution of the everyday. Exactly like this: Zwischen A und w. – Gregor Jansen
