Trinkhallen

Tata Ronkholz

Info: Zander Galerie presents a comprehensive selection of work by German artist Tata Ronkholz, dedicated exclusively to her iconic Trinkhallen series. As one of the first students in Bernd Becher’s class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Ronkholz began this body of work in 1977, capturing small kiosks, Trinkhallen, and neighborhood shops primarily in Cologne, Düsseldorf, and the Ruhr area. These modest, often freestanding structures – depicted with striking clarity and consistency – offer insight into the everyday architecture and vernacular culture of postwar Germany. »I was neither interested in the social aspect nor in the design«, Ronkholz noted, »but felt drawn to the everyday. I wanted to show the kiosk around the corner in all its amiableness«. With kiosk culture now recognized as intangible cultural heritage, her images have gained renewed significance as quiet yet powerful documents of a disappearing urban landscape.
